A sun temple (or Suriyanar kovil)in tamilnadu is a divine place used for religious or spiritual activities, such as prayer and to achieve the higher position in your life,dedicated to the sun deity.

Temple history: The temple was built during the reign of King
Kulothunga Chola (1060 AD - 1118 AD). It is said that the temple was originally
called Argavanam and later became the Suriyanar Kovil.
In the northern part of the
Himalayas, many sages were studying the four Vedas, the six Virtues, the
Eighteen Puranas, the Sixty-six Arts, and the Ninety-Six Philosophies. One of
those sages is Kalava Sage.
The sage Kalava perform
meditation and suppressed the Five Element Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Spirit by
his meditation in the Himalayan ritual and looked at the Navagrahas. Inspired
by his penance, the nine gods also appeared. The sage of Kalava informed them
that he had leprosy(skin desease) and asked them to cure it, they offered
him a boon and nine gods were hidden.As he contemplated his opposite, he later
regretted that he was suffering from leprosy.
The saints who knew him were aware
of his concern. The timely sage explained the ways to prevent the disease at
that time lord bramha called the nava grahas and explained the every person in
the earth should experience their happiness and karma you have changed the
karma of sage kalav by curing his disease ,so bramaha curse the
navagraha gods that they will be effected by the laprosy disease.
As a
consequence of this, they were enlightened and disciplined by Brahma, Vishnu
and Shiva,and suggested them to meditate at the place Vellarukankadu near
kaveri river in south tamilnadu from first Sunday of the karthigai month to the
12th Sunday.
Shiva, with the trident in his hand, created the holy water levels so that the nine gods take bath in those holy river,only those who worship the holy water in these conditions can get the blessings of the god and get rid of their sins,The sun is headed by everyone in temple and, the name of Suriyanar Temple is said to be the name of the town.
How to Worship
Upon reaching the temple, you must
first take bath in the pond or bathrooms near the temple ,then worship the
royal tower darshan and see Tirtha VinayakanThen there is the darshan of
the Navagraha festive planets,Next worship should reach and worship Srikasi
Vishwanath after should reach the establishment hall and worship Sri Sri
Visalakshmi Amma, Then visit the main Sri Suriya Bhagavan and make your
prayers, After praying Lord Surya, stand back and worship Guru Bhagavan.
Next is the goodness of the worship of other planetary gods, including Saturn
in the east. Fall down and worship the flag-tree, and then walk around the
temple courtyard nine times. After the crawl, sit on one side and worship
the Navagraha heroes.
